Joseph, Ellen moved to the Ashton-under-Lyne area of Lancashire between 1841 and 1851 with their then family.

At the 1861 census their daughter Sarah was described as married and surname Fordwin. Anne Norton was described as daughter but her birth date is the same as that of Annie who was described as Charlotte's daughter in the 1871 census. However, Henry aged 4 months and described as Charlotte's son in the 1871 census, was described as grandson.
At the 1851 census their daughter Mary was living with them along with her husband Robert Pepper. Charlotte was not with her parents at this census.
