The attribution of Ann (Mrs Ann Mather) as William's mother has been made only because she was said to be "mother" under the "relation to the head" column of the 1881 census. No other proof has been found.
In 1841 he was living with Ann and William Eden and his surname was stated as "Eden". It seems likely that he was born to Ann before her marriage to William Eden and may be his son.
