In the 1891 census Sarah Jane's surname is given as Pilkington. This is also the surname used by Martha Lydia when she married William Ackers. However Sarah used the surname Hayes when she married John Martindale. Martha Lydia's father is unknown but possibly Joseph Hayes who married her mother, Margaret Pilkington of Gerards Bridge, St Helens albeit some years later.
